Sea Colony Tennis wins USTA honors

Sea Colony Tennis Director Thomas Johnston was named United States Tennis Association Delaware District Tournament Director of the Year, and the Bethany Beach-area resort tennis program earned its fourth consecutive USTA Middle States Premier Provider honor at February’s district awards ceremony.

Sea Colony Tennis netted top honors at February’s United States Tennis Association (USTA) Delaware District 2019 awards ceremony in Wilmington. The Bethany Beach-area tennis center earned USTA Middle States Premier Provider status for the fourth consecutive year, while Tennis Director Thomas Johnston garnered Tournament Director of the Year.

Sea Colony and this year’s other Premier Provider honorees were recognized for offering well-rounded programs and supporting USTA initiatives, including 10 & Under Tennis, Junior Team Tennis, Tennis On Campus, USTA League Tennis and USTA tournaments, as well as community outreach efforts.

A supporter of competitive tennis at all levels, Sea Colony hosts a dozen USTA tournaments each year for juniors and adults. Johnston was named Tournament Director of the Year for his leadership at October’s Boys 16 & Under National Clay Court Championship and June’s ResortQuest Pro Women’s Open at Sea Colony, a $25,000 USTA Pro Circuit clay-court event.

After a decade-long tenure at Virginia’s award-winning Wintergreen Resort, Johnston brought his playing, teaching and coaching experience to the Sea Colony beach and tennis resort. Johnston is a three-time All-American and former head men’s coach at the University of Virginia. Certified by the United State Professional Tennis Association and Professional Tennis Registry, Johnston earned USTA Delaware District Pro of the Year honors in 2012.

Over the past decade, Sea Colony earned additional local, national and global honors. In its current poll, Tennis Resorts Online (TRO) ranked Sea Colony among the world’s Top 20 camps and the No. 18 resort, as well as No. 4 for “Best Resort Junior Programs.” Sea Colony is one of four destinations to make this year’s global Top 20 for both tennis resorts and tennis camps.

In addition to the world-wide tributes, the beach and tennis resort community earned domestic accolades as a 2012 and 2016 USTA Outstanding Facility of the Year, as well as a 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 USTA Middle States Section Premier Provider.

Sea Colony Tennis offers a range of camps, clinics and private instruction to tennis players of all ages and skill levels throughout the year. The resort’s tennis facilities feature 34 tennis courts, including six indoor hard courts, 14 outdoor hard courts and 14 Har-Tru clay courts, as well as a full-service pro shop.
