Joseph J. “Joe” Borek, 91, passed away at his home in Dagsboro, Del., on Feb. 26, 2020, after an extended illness. He was born in Worcester, Mass., on Aug. 19, 1928, the son of the late Walter and Helen Borek.
Borek enlisted in the U.S. Army after high school, serving five years, from 1948 to 1952, including service in occupied Japan and in the Korean War. After his military service, Borek attended college on the G.I. Bill and graduated from the University of Bridgeport with a degree in industrial engineering. He then worked through to retirement in federal service, including tours with his family in Europe (France and Germany), before settling in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., and ultimately retiring to Delaware.
He was a precocious and talented professional musician, teaching piano as a teenager, performing in the Army Band, jazz bands and working around the D.C. circuit in the Musician’s Union for most of his adult life. He was also an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting and gardening. Borek was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Bethany Beach, Del.,. and a lifetime member of the Mason Dixon VFW Post 7234 in Ocean View, Del.
In addition to his parents, Borek was preceded in death by his siblings, Walter, Frank and Helen, and his grandson, Nathan. Borek is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen Borek; sons, Kevin of Glenwood, Md., and Gregory of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and five grandchildren, Travus, Evan, Jordan, Madeline and John.
A Mass of Christian Burial was to be held March 3, 2020, at St. Ann’s Parish, Bethany Beach, Del., with the Rev. John Klevence officiating. Interment was to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, with military honors by the Mason Dixon VFW Post 7234 Honor Guard.
