There will be no town council election in Millville again this year, but there is an opening that will need to be filled, as Council Treasurer Susan Brewer is stepping down from her seat on the council.
The Town received only two candidate applications for its annual election, from current Mayor Robert Gordon and Council Secretary Peter Michel, but Brewer announced her plans to retire at the Tuesday, Feb. 12, council meeting, leaving one seat open going into the 2019-2020 council year, with Brewer's term to expire in March 2021.
The Town advertised that until Feb. 25 it will be accepting letters of interest from residents seeking to fill the opening. Although the notice said the opening may be filled at the council's Feb. 26 meeting, Gordon said after the Feb. 12 meeting that his first priority will be filling all five openings on the Town's newly expanded Planning & Zoning Commission.
The commission had been reduced to a committee of three members — all either town staff or council members — due to problems getting residents to serve, but a revised ordinance that was approved would allow for five to nine full-time residents to serve. Botchie explained at a December meeting that she felt the Town's full-time population had increased, and there would subsequently be letters of interest from more residents because of potential concerns over future development and the desire for a ,more diverse planning board.
Gordon said the Town currently has “six or seven” applications for the planning commission positions and that he hopes to have those members appointed by mid-March.
As he announced Brewer's retirement after five years on the town council and three years on the Planning & Zoning Commission, Gordon lauded her dedication to the Town.
“We are going to miss Susan,” he said, praising what he called the “quiet fashion” of her service to the Town.
“I'll be an advocate of the town forever,” Brewer said, “and maybe even be back; but right now, I need to resign,” she said.
Letters of interest regarding the council opening will be accepted until Feb. 25. Applicants must be 21 or older, a United States resident, a Delaware resident and a resident of Millville for at least 90 days. Letters should be addressed to Deborah Botchie, Town of Millville, 36404 Club House Rd., Millville DE 19967. For more information, contact Botchie at the town office at (302) 539-0449.
