Bethany Beach

• The Bethany Beach Non-Residential Design Review Committee will meet on March 8 at 10 a.m. at town hall. The agenda for the meeting includes a request from tenant Benjamin Wang for a new black awning and vinyl lettering, to be located on an existing awning frame, for his business Sandy Pony Donuts.

• The Bethany Beach Patrol will hold open lifeguard tryouts on Saturday, March 30, at 9 a.m. and on Saturday, April 6, at 9 a.m. Both tryouts will be held at the Sea Colony Swim & Fitness Center. • Beginning Jan. 1, 2019, Bethany Beach Town Hall is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Those hours will be in effect until May 1, 2019, when hours will extend to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

• Bethany Beach's pay-to-park season ended Sept. 15 and will return on May 15, 2019.

• Prohibitions on dogs on the beach and boardwalk in Bethany Beach ended Sept. 30. They will resume on May 15, 2019.

• The regular meetings of the Bethany Beach Town Council and Planning Commission are now being broadcast, with video, over the Internet via the Town's website at, under Live-Audio Broadcasts. South Bethany

• The Town of South Bethany is now accepting applications for seasonal positions, including public works and police. Visit the website for details.

• The town council's budget workshops will be held Feb. 28 and March 28 at 3 p.m. Town Hall will also host a public meeting on the 2020-fiscal-year draft budget on March 8 at 5 p.m.

• The Town will host a St. Patrick's Day potluck celebration on March 16 at 6 p.m. See the Town website for details and to RSVP.

• The town council is seeking to simplify the Town's parking permits by setting up one type of residential permit. People would get for four identical tags, rather than the current dual system of nontransferable permits and transferable permits. A parking kiosk is being installed in February, and permits will also be available through the Town website. The changes do not affect parking fees. Officially, the town council has approved the first of three readings of Ordinance 194-19 to amend the town code, Chapter 94, to make the changes.

• Anyone able to lend corn hole boards to the Town's 50-Year Anniversary Celebration should contact Town Hall or Sue Callaway. The party will be held on Sunday, June 30, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Town Hall, rain or shine. The family-friendly event includes food, music, face painting, gifts and prizes.

• The 2019 Board of Election includes Carolyn Marcello, Bonnie Rae and Sally Baker. Election workers will be Pat Spangler, Sue Allensbach, Margaret Oliver and alternate Sandy Raymond.

• Town of South Bethany officials are reminding property owners that, to avoid frozen water pipes, they should make sure to properly winterize their homes. People can report broken water pipes to Artesian Water Customer Service at (302) 453-6930, and Artesian's inspector can visit the property and manage the issue. Town of South Bethany staff are not permitted to access private properties, they emphasized.

• The winter collection schedule has begun, with trash picked up on Mondays, and recycling and yard-waste picked up every other Friday and Wednesday, respectively.

• For the first time in years, Selbyville will hold a town council election, scheduled for March 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with voting at town hall. Two council seats are up for election, with incumbents Frank Smith III and Clarence W. Tingle Jr. running for re-election, and challenger William A. Thompson also running for a seat. Mayor Clifton C. Murray was the only candidate to file for mayor and will receive a new two-year term. The deadline for voter registration was Friday, Feb. 8.

• The Planning & Zoning Commission will meet Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. to discuss a partitioning plan for 56 acres on the southeast corner of Lighthouse Road and Hudson Road (parcel 533-17.00-182.00) owned by Keith and Shelley Coffin.

Indian River School District

• Progress reports will be issued on March 22, with parent conferences on Feb. 25 to 28 (contact schools for schedules).

• All high-schoolers in the Indian River School District are being invited to a College & Career Fair on Feb. 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Sussex Central High School. Parents and students can speak with representatives from various colleges and universities, training programs and local businesses. Students will learn about post-grad options and current jobs available to high school students.

• The next regular monthly meeting of the Indian River Board of Education will be Monday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. at Sussex Central High School.

• There will be no school for students or teachers on Friday, March 1.

• Committee meetings will be held Monday, March 11, at Indian River Education Complex in Selbyville: Policy at 4 p.m.; Curriculum at 5 p.m.; Buildings and Grounds at 6 p.m.; and Finance at 7 p.m.

• The Indian River School District's major capital improvement and current expense referendum on Tuesday, Feb. 5, saw the measures defeated by 55 to 45 percent of votes. The referendum sought funding for the construction of a new Sussex Central High School, an eight-classroom addition at Indian River High School and a four-classroom addition at Selbyville Middle School, as well as funding for staff, curriculum, supplies, transportation and utility expenses for a high school and elementary school.

The new facilities are needed to address ongoing growth in the school population. The additional school tax proposed for the current expense question was 9 cents per $100 of assessed value and for construction a maximum of 35 cents per $100 of assessed value, which would decrease to zero over time. The district is permitted to hold another referendum within 60 days of the failed one, but district officials have yet to announce whether that will happen.

The Delaware Transit Corporation (DTC) will hold a public hearing workshop on Thursday, March 7, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the Georgetown Public Library, Meeting Room B, for the public to provide input and comments on proposed changes to DART statewide bus services to become effective May 19.

The workshop will begin with a 30-minute open house, allowing attendees to view proposed schedules, interact with staff, receive clarification and fill out comment forms. The remainder of the workshop will include a presentation of the proposed service changes, followed by public testimony for those wishing to provide comments to the audience, and to the hearing reporter. Attendees may also provide comments privately to the hearing reporter during the open house or following public testimony.
