This week, after the playing of the Olympics theme that softly spread across Fairway Village, Olympic torch carrier Mike Smith entered the arena, followed by Fairway Village resident Rob Gill, who — representing VFW 7234 — smartly presented the flag. The parade of the resident states followed, and then the games began, for both the younger youth, as well as the older youth.

Speaking of older youth, martial arts instructor Phil Miller led an impressive exhibition of the entire squad of our former synchronized swim team, who this year danced with colorful ribbons in synchronization to the songs of the various participating states. They added great entertainment value to the athletic festivities.

The games this year again featured the pickleball toss, won by former police officer Mike Darcy. Mike Smith took silver in another old favorite, the Hula Hoop, losing to hipster Mary Lee Sutherland. Team races to pass sand to team members all had granular finishes.

Festivities ended with sumptuous food that would never be accepted at any training table, but sure was good. The Fairway Village Olympic organizers are a talented group and were led by Nancy Leuckl.
