USA South (Morristown, Tenn.) couldn’t afford another loss following its 9-0 opening-round shutout loss to USA Central (South Bend, Ind.). Consecutive losses could very well have knocked them out of contention for the Senior Softball League World Series crown. Morristown, Tenn., represented the USA South last year and failed to win a game – and this year’s team isn’t interested in repeating that bit of history.

“This game was very important,” USA South Manager Tim Myers said. “You go 0-2 in this [World Series] and you’re out.

“All the girls knew we had to win,” he added.

They loaded the bases four times in the first three innings, on eight hits, seven walks and on two hit batters, to score 13 runs in a 13-3 win over EMEA (Den Bosch, Netherlands). Six USA South batters recorded at least one hit, with Ashley Tharp and Leslie Poole leading the way with two hits and an RBI apiece. In each of the first three innings, USA South batted around the order, and EMEA struggled to keep pace after the first inning.

USA South jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the first, but EMEA would strike back. Sophie Mollee, Zoe Anasagasti and Monique Melissant loaded the bases on two walks and a bunt single, respectively, and scored on three consecutive fielder’s choice hits in the bottom half of the first.

Twice, USA South tried to make the play at home instead of the sure out, and EMEA capitalized. But, from there, USA South settled and their defense stymied a comeback attempt.

In three of the last four innings, USA South worked three-up, three-down innings on an average of 14 total pitches per inning. Suzanne Everhart (1-0) pitched 2 1/3 innings, walked three and struck out one to earn the win before making way for Halie Vannoy, who closed out the final 2 2/3 innings with three strikeouts, including two in the fifth.

“In the first [inning] we made some mental errors, but we settled down and played ball,” Myers said. “We’ve got a great bunch of girls and they never quit.”
