Dominant pitching lifts Central
Prior to each half-inning Central’s All-stars spent in the field, music blared from speakers next to the press box and the team’s left fielder, Ashley Gates, danced. No matter the score, she closed her hand, pretended it was a microphone and sung, encouraging others to do the same.
Latin America breaks out the lumber
In 1634, the Netherlands conquered the Islands of Curacao, Aruba and Bonaire, followed by others islands in the region, to make them part of the Dutch West Indies. In 1954, the Netherlands Antilles became a separate country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Southwest takes battle from Latin America
Pool B of the Senior League Softball World Series is a dog-fight for seeding in the semi-finals, and as of Aug. 9, USA Central (South Bend, Ind.) stood alone as the only undefeated team (3-0) in their pool, followed by 2-1 Latin America (Willemstad, Curacao) and 2-1 USA Southwest (San Antonio, Texas).
Family affair
On a winter night in Indiana a few years ago, Mike Amodei said, he heard a popping sound coming from outside his house. When he went to check the noise, all he heard was “10 more Maria; a couple more Angela.”
Canada bounces back, tops South
Canada team manager Kevin Carr never doubted his players’ capabilities and knows that they are more than worthy of competing here, in Roxana, for a Senior League Softball World Series Championship. But a disappointing 11-0 opening-round loss, marred by errors, to the first-place (3-0) Pool A USA East team may have made folks question how legitimate their chances were.
Netherlands shows heart in loss
Down 9-0 in the seventh inning Thursday with two outs and facing sure elimination, the Netherlands All-stars continued to chant from the dugout, encouraging their teammates at the plate as they had done all week.
District III blanks Canada, 10-0
By having a relatively quiet night in the batter’s box, Delaware District III (Seaford, Del.) had to find alternate ways to generate offense. And luckily for them, the Canadian (Windsor, Ontario) team was willing to cooperate.

Welcome to the 2006 Senior League Softball World Series
Welcome to the Coastal Point’s coverage of the 2006 Senior League Softball World Series.
Latin America tops West
Two first-inning leadoff walks and a pair of one-out run-producing hits to the outfield proved to be enough ammunition in a 4-2 Latin America (Willemstad, Curaco, N.A.) win over the West (Bloomington, Calif.) in the opening game of the Senior League Softball World Series on Aug. 6.
District III loses opener to East
Local Power Milford’s 1-3 standing in the Senior League Eastern Regional left the East’s (Milton, Pa.) manager Mike Balliet unimpressed with Delaware softball initially, and why not? Milford was outscored 25-7 and was shutout twice before heading home. But his opinion would change after gritting out a 6-1 victory in their opening round game over the District III representative (Seaford, Del.).
Gillis walk-off caps pitching performance
After a plane ride from Indiana, a bus ride from the airport and eight innings on the mound, Central’s Maria Gillis stood at bat Sunday night, runners on first and second and no outs, with a chance to win the World Series opener for her team.
Volunteers run this show
Some hand out burgers and fries. Others keep score; announce each batter coming to the plate or drive players and coaches around in golf carts. But about an hour before each game of the Senior League Softball World Series at the Lower Sussex Little League Complex, they all look to one person for direction.
Bats arrive in Central's second win
Less than 24 hours after scoring only two runs in an extra-inning win over Southwest, the Central All-Stars’ bats finally arrived in Roxana. The Senior League Softball All-Star team from South Bend, Ind., scored 12 runs on 13 hits Tuesday, beating Netherlands (EMEA) 12-0 in a five-inning game.
East takes advantage of chances
Any coach will admit that it’s tough to win games when their players make errors in the field. And on Aug. 7, Canada (Ontario, Canada) committed 10 such mistakes in an 11-0 mercy-rule loss to the East (Milton, Pa.).
Storm dampens District III power
Throughout Aug. 7’s Game Six of the Senior League Softball World Series against District III (Seaford, Del.) and Southern representative (Morristown, Tenn.), announcer Roy Lamberton made it clear that there was to be no flash photography or the game would be postponed.
Storm wipes out battle of the west
Distant lightning and speculation that a strong storm was heading toward Roxana halted the match-up between the West (Bloomington, Cal.) and the Southwest (San Antonio, Texas) with the Southwest team holding a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning on Monday, Aug. 7.
