Distant lightning and speculation that a strong storm was heading toward Roxana halted the match-up between the West (Bloomington, Cal.) and the Southwest (San Antonio, Texas) with the Southwest team holding a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning on Monday, Aug. 7.
Things started out well for the Southwest team, as Kristie Leal drove in Ashley Perez with a single up the middle off West pitcher Audry Arballo to plate the first run of the game. Jackie Gonzalez followed with a blooper to short right field that scored Brittany McDonald, and the Southwest team was ahead 2-0 before the West ever came to bat.
Southwest pitcher Nichelle Sandoval made sure the lead held up, striking out two in the bottom half of the inning and only allowing a single by West’s Felecia Mendoza.
The West did strike in the bottom of the second, when Margarita Comarena hit a sacrifice fly to center, pushing in Jaime Cole with the run to close the score to 2-1.
But the Southwest put the pressure back on in the top of the third. Jenevieve Jimenez led off with a single up the middle and came around to score on a triple by Amanda Delgado. Leal then followed with a sacrifice fly to center, giving the Southwest a 4-1 lead.
Mendoza came in for relief in the next inning for the West and held the Southwest scoreless in the fourth, but Sandoval kept up the pressure, preventing the West from scoring again.
Southwest picked up their fifth run with an odd play in the top of the fifth inning.
Jackie Gonzalez started the rally with a single to center, and moved ahead to second on a wild pitch. Gonzales then continued to move around the bases when she advanced to third on a groundout by Sandoval.
With two outs, Angel Escobedo hit a hard grounder back to the pitcher, Jackie Trombie, who was knocked down, picked up the ball and fired to first, but the throw got away and Sandoval motored in to score. Escobedo got hung up between first and second and eventually got run down in the impromptu game of “pickle” by Arballo, who had moved to first base.
The inning ended and the sky lit up, halting the game at 5-1 with the West coming to bat.
