A group of Lord Baltimore Elementary School students rejoice knowing that the next Coastal Point is soon on its way. Fine, they were simply enjoying being kids and having fun.

Millville institutes property tax hike
Citing a depleting general fund and a need to be proactive in budgeting, the Millville Town Council voted Tuesday night to enact a significant hike in property taxes. However, after hearing complaints from local businessmen, the council voted to cut out a part of the proposed ordinance that called for a new 5 percent rental tax.

Transfer tax take-away still proposed
During a review of pending legislation from the 2007 General Assembly session, Sussex County Council members on Tuesday continued their unanimous opposition to House Bill 111, which county officials said they’d been opposing “strongly and effectively” to date.

Jones takes over county council leadership
Democrat Finley Jones of Sussex County’s second district took over the reins as president of the county council on Tuesday, Jan. 8, succeeding outgoing Council President Dale Dukes (D-1st) with the first vote of the council in 2008.

Water close to being a reality
Ocean View is entering the home stretch with its central water system, as town officials moved Monday to formally establish rates that will be charged to water customers for operation of the new system and repayment of the town’s debt service for its construction, with a first reading of the associated ordinance.

Selbyville sets public hearings on ordinances
Selbyville officials have set public hearings on several ordinance changes for the start of their Feb. 4 meeting, lining up changes for neighborhood business uses and in setbacks in the town’s residential districts.

County council favors expansion to seven
The Sussex County Council on Tuesday reversed its previous position of opposition to House Bill 42, which was passed in the state’s House of Representatives last year but is still pending in the state Senate.

Recycling drop off center dropped
It’s one of the most popular destinations for “green”-minded residents and visitors to the area, but as of March 2008, the recycling drop-off center in Millville will itself be headed for the recycling bin.

Local artist shooting for the stars
An artist by trade, Milan Murray uprooted from Philadelphia after 15 years of residency and moved to the area only a short while ago, but has already carved out quite a reputation for himself.

Council to ask for development district power
Despite no actual plans yet to employ the power, Sussex County Council members on Jan. 8 voted 3-2 to ask the state’s General Assembly to pass legislation that would enable the county to create special development districts (SDDs) to help pay for infrastructure associated with development.
