Killmer returns to planning chairmanship
After stepping down from the Bethany Beach Town Council during this year’s election season, Lew Killmer has now returned to his former spot at the head of the town’s planning commission. Praised for a great job and given a round of applause, outgoing two-year Chairwoman Kathleen Mink announced at the commission’s Oct. 20 meeting that she wanted to “give someone else a turn.”
Holiday enthusiasts ready to fall for many Halloween happenings
Each year, something about Oct. 31 just seems to bring out the kid in everyone, whether it’s the decorating, the costumes or the plethora of candy. Whatever the case, people have enjoyed tick-or-treating just as much as original events surrounding the holiday.
New Bethany Beach Web site taking shape
Bethany Beach Town Council Member and Communications Committee Chairman Tracy Mulligan gave those in attendance at the council’s Oct. 19 meeting a sneak peek into the future face of the town on the Internet, unveiling the current draft of the new town Web site, which is currently on schedule to go live Jan. 4.
Bethany Beach may give verbal warning
Bethany Beach installed a new lightning warning system this summer, designed to warn police and lifeguards that a lightning-producing storm is in the vicinity so that they can clear the town’s beach and boardwalk and thus reduce the chances of beachgoers being struck by lightning.
Group hopes to boost second season
Scott Spencer, owner of Bethany Beach gift shop Of All Things!, wants to give his business life that extends well beyond the summer season, and he’s prepared to get his hands dirty to do it.
Dog proponents barking up wrong tree
Supporters of creating a dog park in the Bethany Beach did not get the support from the town council that they may have hoped for on Oct. 19. After previously raising the idea as one possible use at the undeveloped town-owned property at Routes 1 and 26, proponents of the dog park have repeatedly been told by some council members that they think the idea is wrong for Bethany Beach.
The Agenda
Bethany approves recycling contract
Bethany Beach residents and visitors will be able to kick of the new year with a new environmentally friendly habit: curbside recycling. Starting Jan. 1, 2008, the Delaware Solid Waste Authority will pick up recyclables from a single 65 gallon can placed at the curb of participating properties in the town — on Fridays, weekly during the summer (June through September) and bi-weekly the rest of the year.
Beach smoking ban to be aired publicly
The Bethany Beach Town Council voted at their Oct. 19 meeting on the issue of a smoking ban for the town’s beaches, ocean, boardwalk, bandstand, parks and playgrounds. But the vote wasn’t the one smoker’s-rights proponents have feared since the issue was first raised early this summer — at least not yet.
Bethany bandies boardwalk bicycle ban
While newly widened beaches may spell relief for beachgoers chafing at trying to find a clear spot on the crowded sands of Bethany Beach, the ever-increasing number of people visiting the town and its boardwalk are forcing the town to also consider whether bicyclists should be banned to gain a little more elbow room on the boardwalk for pedestrians.
Transportation plan focuses on growing, again population
In this fourth and final edition in a series of articles detailing elements of Sussex County’s current draft of this 2007 County Comprehensive Plan Update, released Sept. 25, the Coastal Point will look at the mobility element of the draft plan, as prepared by the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT).
La Mirage finds new oasis in Ocean View
Business owners Tommie Adams and Barry Kehler have worked to establish La Mirage Inc. in the area for two decades. Now in the same building with the Ocean View tanning salon I’d Rather Be Tanning, Adams and Kehler are bringing their hair styling studio and backroom boutique to another level.
Beach construction nears Bethany's south end
Work on beach reconstruction in Bethany Beach neared completion of the initial construction phase mid-week, as workers from Weeks Marine approached Cedarwood Street at the town’s south end with efforts to widen the beach and build a new 16-foot-tall dune.
Sussex SPCA promotes puppy (and kitty) love
It's hard to look into the sad, brown eyes of a puppy just wanting to be loved, or a cat just waiting to snuggle up to you and know you are not there to take one home. But it's just as hard when you are there to take one home, when you are trying to bond with one, or trying to figure out just by looking at them or playng with them, that you'll be a good match.
A friend in need, man's best friend, indeed
I've always been a dog person--nothing at all against those who are feline-friendly. I'm fond of them too ... that is, when they aren't scratching, clawing, biting, meowing, and regurgitating a wookie. (My parents' cat, George, also has a disturbing habit of drooling when he's content. Go figure.)
