Community design, preservation addressed in county comp plan
In this third of a series of articles detailing elements of Sussex County’s current draft of this 2007 County Comprehensive Plan Update, released Sept. 25, the Coastal Point will look at sections of the plan dealing with historic preservation, intergovernmental coordination and community design.
Ocean View looks at election changes
A snafu with town council districts in the 2007 elections led Ocean View officials to take a deeper look into the town’s election laws recently. And while the problem that led to the controversy over districts has yet to be fully resolved, the town’s Board of Elections had its hands full with other anticipated changes to election regulations at an Oct. 15 meeting, thanks to new rules instituted last year by the Delaware legislature.
Bethany looks at changes to commission
Bethany Beach Town Council members will hear a first reading tonight of an ordinance that could change the makeup of the town’s planning commission. They discussed the proposed changes during their council workshop on Thursday, Oct. 11, with some council members not yet giving a clear indication how they might vote on the issue.
County P&Z recommends four applications
The Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission met for the second time in seven days on Wednesday, Oct. 17, to conclude several items of old business and various other cases from recent hearings.
Toomey perserving safety in Dagsboro
Sgt. Floyd Toomey has had some shoes to fill since coming on board to the Dagsboro Police Department, but he’s done so, stepping up as acting police chief upon the resignation of former chief William Dudley.
Board tables decision on Hocker billboards
The Hocker family will have to wait at least another few weeks to know whether or not they will get the go-ahead for two new billboards proposed for their property at the intersection of Routes 17 and 26. The Sussex County Board of Adjustments at their Oct. 15 meeting tabled a decision on a request by Gerald Hocker, as presented by Gerry Hocker, to permit the two billboards, at a height of 38 feet, with additional signs.

Replenishment finished on Bethany's north end
Beach reconstruction activity in Bethany Beach moved back to the south this week, as Weeks Marine completed construction of a new, wider beach and a new dune running from Hollywood Street to the town’s northern boundary at Fifth Street and a taper to the non-replenished private beach at Sussex Shores.
Halloween parade to make Selbyville spooktacular
Selbyville is once again preparing for the town’s Halloween extravaganza, set for Wednesday, Oct. 24, right at the center of town. The event, nearly half a century in the making, runs from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and draws an extensive crowd each year, inviting friends and family from surrounding areas.

Rocktober Fishing Tournament and Festival casts its 4th year
Anglers and fishermen have geared up this weekend for the area’s largest fishing tournament to date, the Fourth Annual Rocktober Fishing Tournament and Festival on October 19, 20 and 21 at the Indian River Marina. Over $24,000 will be given away in cash and prizes, including a $9,000 cash award to the person who brings in the largest rockfish.

Bethany Beach Yoga keeps minds and bodies sharp in new location
Since Labor Day weekend, the Bethany Beach Yoga Center has been enjoying its new, more centralized location, just a few miles down the road from its former home. Established in the area for more than a half-decade and previously situated above Isabella’s Restaurant in Bethany, they made the move to a new, convenient and more hospitable environment at 158B Central Avenue in Millville.

Win over Milford kindles Indians' hopes
On Oct. 12, one week after losing their first game of the season, the Indian River varsity football team rebounded to defeat Milford 27-20.

The Lady Indians varsity field hockey team continued their winning ways on Oct. 16 with a 2-0 shutout over rival Sussex Central.
Indian River runs through Delmar
After a rough streak of five winless games, Indian River volleyball bounced back Tuesday, Oct. 16, to chalk up a victory against Delmar, following their two-week stint. The Indians were able to shut the Wildcats down in three games, though Delmar tried to keep it close. Indian River came out on top in the crucial second game with a final score of 27-25 after 10 lead changes.
