As work continues on replenishing the beach in Bethany Beach, some have expressed concerns over the height of the dune in front of the boardwalk.

Dune height causing a concern
Area residents and interested visitors have taken to gathering along Bethany Beach’s boardwalk over the last week, to watch the progress of the town’s beach reconstruction project. They’ve lined the railing at the eastern edge of the boardwalk to watch as the first portions of some 3.2 million cubic yards of sand are pumped onto the beach to create new dunes and a wider shoreline.

Bethany takes closer look at recycling
Members of the Bethany Beach Recycling committee perused the town on Tuesday, accompanied by Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA)’s senior manager of statewide recycling, Rich VonStetten, in hopes of coming to a conclusion concerning central drop-off locations. The meeting came in reference to the proposed town-wide voluntary curbside recycling program, upon which the town council will vote this month.

County comp plan maps path for the future
In this first of a series of stories detailing elements of Sussex County’s current draft of this 2007 County Comprehensive Plan Update, released last week, the Coastal Point will look at the plan’s introduction and sections regarding future land-use planning, conservation, and recreation and open space.

County seeks power for districts
Locally, Millville officials are already well familiar with the notion of special development districts, having been approached by several area developers with the idea that the town might want to ask for the power to create the districts as a way to finance infrastructure and other needed elements as growth centers on the town.

The Sussex County Council is considering asking for state legislation that would clarify the county’s ability to establish overlay zones.

Selbyville's working on election reform
With major changes for municipal elections around the state, thanks to legislative reforms on the state level, Selbyville is not alone in having to change how it conducts is annual town council elections. Council members mulled some of their choices at their Oct. 1 meeting and decided to put in place both a board of elections and a set of three election officers to monitor and run their elections, respectively.

Dewey Music Conference rocks the beach
Bands from all over the country, and around the world, showed up this past weekend for one of Dewey Beach’s largest and most talent-filled free shows: the Dewey Beach Music Conference. Headed by event coordinator Vikki Walls, the conference had a turnout that hit record numbers as 150 bands played throughout the Dewey Beach area for three nights of nonstop entertainment.

Local woman cruising through life
It’s easy to wander off and think about taking a vacation in Baja or Fiji when talking with Lisa Daisey, 29, of Millville. This past Christmas was the first Christmas in 10 years that she spent at home with her family. After 10 years of traveling and spending the holidays in Hawaii, the Caribbean or Baja, seeing the waters of the world, Daisey made it home for Christmas 2006.

Chalkboard makes its mark

In a game between two of the Henlopen Conference’s best varsity soccer teams, very little separated Indian River and Caesar Rodney. Both are very skilled, have proud traditions and are considered among the elite teams in Delaware.
