Bethany committee members recommends beach smoking ban
After a month to reviw public comments, scientific data and their own concerns about implementation, members of Bethany Beach's Charter and Ordinance Review Committee voted unanimously on Sept. 20 to recommend a smoking ban for the town's beaches.

Justin's Beach House receives planning approval
It’s just one of five dwelling units slated for the Sand Dollar Walk planned residential development in Bethany Beach, but the spirits of all those involved were lifted Saturday, Sept. 25, when the town’s planning commission granted final planning approval to those units and what will someday become Justin’s Beach House, a respite and vacation home for families affected by cancer.

Lot maintenance, ‘Clean Hands’ to hearing
The Sussex County Council moved forward on two pieces of proposed legislation this week, at their Tuesday, Sept. 25, meeting. Council President Dale Dukes introduced final drafts of the county’s new proposed lot maintenance ordinance and on a new “clean hands” policy requiring those applying for county permits to first pay up on amounts owed to the county.

County unveils new comprehensive plan
Sussex County and Delaware Department of Transportation officials unveiled the final draft of the county’s much talked-about comprehensive plan update on Tuesday in Rehoboth Beach, to a moderate crowd of local officials, conservationists, large land owners and other interested citizens, in the first of two public meetings opening the final stages of dialogue on the plan.

Bethany gets lesson in emergency prep
On Saturday, Sept. 22, some Bethany residents received important information concerning family emergency preparedness. Led by Ralph Mitchell, director of public safety for Bethany Beach, residents attending a free workshop were informed of how to better ready themselves in the case of an emergency situation. A presentation was provided by members of Delaware’s Emergency Management Agency, and more specifically, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

While most of the town has welcomed the business with open arms, some of the neighbors of the new Captain Jack’s Mini-Golf in Bethany Beach aren’t too happy with it after its first summer of operation.

Indians JV grinds through second week of play
After falling behind 13-0 to Sussex Central in the first half on Sept. 24, it would have been easy for the Indian River junior varsity football team to just pack it up and call it a day. They could have — but they didn’t. And they went on to pull the score within one touchdown before ultimately losing 28-12.
