Residents to vote on Johnson's Corner sewer
Salvatore and Carmelita Liberto moved from a troubled Baltimore neighborhood on May 15, 2002, into a home in Fenwick West, off of Route 20. Retired, the two do not work and live on a fixed income. But on Saturday, they will be two of hundreds of residents voting on a proposed Sussex County sewer district that will cost them thousands upfront and year after year, if the district is approved.

Marina vows to correct financial debacle
A state audit review recently deduced that a financial slip-up at the Indian River Marina accounted for more than $162,000 in questionable and undocumented transactions between May 31, 2005, and Dec. 31, 2006. Poor financial bookkeeping, illicit sales and rental rates, and inappropriate discounts were among the concerns in the review made by state Auditor R. Thomas Wagner Jr.

Planners recommend density bonus change
Despite a change one county official said could make the ordinance “unworkable,” Sussex County’s planning and zoning commissioners on Wednesday recommended approval of an ordinance that would allow county officials to trade density restrictions in certain residential developments for cash.

Memorable events cost more
Sussex County Council on Tuesday approved an ordinance that tacks a fee onto marriage ceremonies through the county’s Clerk of the Peace office. George Parish, the county’s eccentric Clerk of the Peace, who performs the ceremonies and reportedly denies all gratuity offers, said the new ordinance will charge for a popular service and save taxpayers’ money.

Harry Potter madness kicks off
Tucked in back rooms, hidden from hordes of crazed fans, local bookstores are stilling quietly holding onto their most prized possession of the year and likely of the new millennium. Late tonight, though, hundreds of copies of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” will be pulled from their current spots within storage rooms and placed on shelves to await the eager hands of fans young and old, which are expected to flock in droves to local bookstores at midnight.

Blue Surf asking town for transformer space
The redevelopment of the landmark oceanfront Blue Surf Motel in Bethany Beach started off with a bang last year, with resounding approval by the town’s Design Review Committee of a plan mixed retail/residential space in a style that some consider a prototype for the town’s preferred architecture.

South Bethany officials draw a line in the sand
Of the 122 calls received by South Bethany police in June, 35 calls were traced directly to activity from the traditional post-graduation visits by high school seniors, who often flock to the area’s beaches from the Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia areas for a week of celebration after their scholastic triumph.

South Bethany reviews vendors, smoking
Neighboring Bethany Beach prohibits beachside vendors, except for the town’s official beach rental concession, but South Bethany has always been relatively open to visits from the ice cream man, the snowball guy and even a farmer or two selling fresh produce from the back of a pickup truck.

In every sport, there is an immeasurable quantity known as pressure. But the pressure that builds during the game is very difficult to replicate — especially for 11- and 12-year-olds. The fact is they just haven’t had enough experience yet.
