Detour options for sewer project reviewed
Just as local residents and business owners begin to adjust to the return of summer traffic woes on Route 26, county officials arrived in Millville on Wednesday with word that travel headaches could continue through the next two years, thanks to planned expansion of the Millville Sewer District along the area’s main east-west route.
Touch of Italy dishing up dolce for Taste
Touch of Italy Bake Shop took a brief hiatus the past few years from the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber’s Taste of Coastal Delaware, but this year owner Diane Bascio said she plans to return in full force, cannolis and all.
Environmental questions remain unanswered
Even as local civic leaders expressed support for a plan to bypass U.S. 113 to the east of Millsboro, Frankford and Dagsboro, environmental roadblocks persist that could keep such a road from ever being built.
Rising fertilizer costs reveal another side of oil market
Even with corn prices up more than 100 percent from December 2005, high oil-based fertilizer costs are stressing local farmers’ budgets. It is a fact that reveals the irony of the unpredictable oil market that carries mostly unseen — or perhaps more accurately, ignored — consequences beyond the gas pump.
Fenwick Island to step outside boudaries?
Earlier this year, a Center for the Inland Bays subcommittee recommended action to protect the environment through this year’s Sussex County Comprehensive plan update. Fenwick Island Town Council last Friday discussed endorsing those recommendations, which include asking the county to enforce regulations already in place to protect the county’s inland bays and to implement further regulations.
The summer sun rises...yet again
Each year, as summer fades into the sunset, things change along the Delaware beaches. Restaurants come and go. Storefronts change hands. But all the while, there are some things that stay the same, waiting for the draw of beachgoers back to the shore.
The Agenda
MVFC steps up for community protection
Summertime along the Delaware seaside means long afternoons on the beach, peaceful evening strolls along the boardwalk, and relaxing family barbeques — that is, once you get past all the traffic.
It's audit time again in Bethany Beach
Bethany Beach finances, while tighter these days, have proven so well managed by Finance Director Janet Connery that, come audit time, members of the Audit Committee are used to looking far forward rather than at the numbers immediately in front of them.
South Bethany focuses on wind, building
With the big kahuna of concerns for the coastal town — beach replenishment — lined up for this fall, South Bethany officials on May 25 turned their eyes toward a number of other environmental issues, organizing a number of committees to do research and make recommendations.
South Bethany readies for big move
South Bethany police are getting ready for their big move, as the completion of construction for the town’s new police station nears.
Dirtbikes stolen from homes in Bethany Bay
A local resident is offering a reward for information leading to an arrest in relation to an incident at her family’s Bethany Bay home this week, when suspects entered her garage in late-night hours and stole two dirt bikes.
Impersonization legislation is Selbyville-spurred
Clara Banks, a 91-year-old Selbyville resident, vividly remembers a frightening day earlier this year when, choking and fearing for her life, she called 911. A man, whose vehicle was affixed with sirens and a license plate normally associated with that of a trained emergency responder, was the first to enter her home and attempt to address the issue.
Bethany tables to change BoA numbers
Bethany Beach Town Council members this week tabled what was the most controversial of the proposals to make changes to the town’s Board of Adjustments: the move from three members to five.
Referendum changes refered back to committee
After successfully leading a petition drive to repeal a height allowance designed to encourage steeper roof pitch, Bethany Beach property owner Dan Costello is again leading a charge against a change in the town. This time, it’s referendums themselves that are what he’d like to see kept as they are.
Millville prepares for hefty June agenda
Millville Town Council members cut through their pending June 16 agenda at a council workshop on Tuesday, May 22, discussing a myriad of resolutions, ordinances, policies and proposed legislation that will, if adopted, change many aspects of how the growing town operates in the future.
Stevenson develops sense of community with fowl flock
The farm — which is just that, despite its sharp contrast with open fields nearby — sits outside Gumboro, carved out of a patch of woods formerly dominated by ticks and other insects that once roamed freely there.

As if running a local fitness center and gym, and establishing an entire football league wasn’t enough, Lewes native and Cape Henlopen High School grad Tony Hall has brought a local business to West Fenwick Island that is unique to the area.

Indian slip against Caravel in softball semifinals
Though the Lady Indians toppled over Seaford last Saturday in the quarterfinals of the state softball tournament, their moment came to a dwindling end, inning by inning, this past Wednesday. Top-seeded Caravel flattened the Indian River team 15-2 at Sports at the Beach in Georgetown on May 30, in the semifinal match of the Delaware High School Softball Tournament.
IR golf scores impressive season despite no three-peat
When the names of the top 16 high school golf teams in Delaware were announced for the state tournament, Indian River head coach Neil Beahan was less than pleased that his team did not make the cut. Even more frustrating was the fact that they fell short by 0.06 of a point.
