After reconstruction, beach funding unclear
South Bethany Mayor Gary Jayne called March 19 the town’s “red letter day,” as word came in of full funding of the anticipated beach reconstruction project there and in neighboring Bethany Beach. But with the long-awaited construction now set to begin this fall, the issue of replenishment funding still remains a potential concern for the two towns in the future.

Numbers might lie ... Real Estate market showing signs of recovery
Local home sales numbers for the first quarter of 2007, which ends tomorrow, show the worst quarter for residential real estate sales in recent memory. Sales, as of Wednesday, were roughly 15 percent below those for the first quarter last year, when the real estate market was in the midst of dramatic downward slide that came with construction delays and job losses.

Bethany tackles election changes
“We had a code that was working and working very nicely,” said Bethany Beach Vice-Mayor Tony McClenny on March 15 to members of his Charter and Ordinance Review Committee (CORC). McClenny was speaking of the town’s election code, which is up for a major revamp thanks to state legislators’ decision last year to change the state election code after problems were cited in other Delaware towns.

Stickels recommends special tax districts
Former Sussex County Administrator Robert Stickels, now working with engineering firm George, Miles & Buhr LLC (GMB), made a pitch to Millville Town Council members at their very first workshop, on March 27, suggesting the town would be wise to consider establishing special tax districts to help finance public improvements and to move quickly to get the authority to do so.

'Mattress Bill' calling it a night

Young IR softball team starts strong, then hit hard
Indian River began their softball season 2-0 with a commanding 21-1 in their opener against St. Mark’s last Thursday. Indian River catcher Lizzy Handy sent her first pitch of the game past the fence, bringing in three runs for a lead that set the pace for the Indians’ win.

Indians bring A-game to the golf course
Despite a tight loss to a hosting Sussex Tech at The Rookery, Indian River golf coach Neil Beahan said he’s very pleased with the way the team has been handling the opening of the season.

Punishers drop to tie for first
The Sussex County Punishers’ one-touchdown, shutout loss to the Calvert County (Md.) Cobras on St. Patty’s Day was not just their first loss of the 2007 Diamond Football League season. It also allowed the Prince George’s County (Md.) Headhunters to cozy themselves up alongside the Punishers in the standings at 3-1, following their 14-0 win over the Queen Anne County (Md.) Thunder.

New coach, young team, high hopes
Stepping up as assistant coach for Indian River’s girls’ tennis team was no tough decision last year for Karen Oliphant. This year, she’s replacing Elizabeth Tiffany as head coach, and Oliphant said she is as ready as ever.
