A bright red, full-size Dodge pickup truck ran over a Bishopville, Md., resident on Polly Branch Road near Selbyville about 10 p.m. on Saturday before leaving the scene of the accident, according to Delaware State Police.
Enouch G. Golphin, 41, was transported to Peninsula Regional Medical Center, where he died of his injuries about 3 a.m. on Sunday morning. According to the state police release, witnesses last saw the truck, which has dual wheels on both sides in the back, heading toward Roxana Road.
Police do not yet have any suspects and have not received any tips regarding the accident, Delaware State Police Public Information Officer Cpl. Jeff Oldham said earlier this week.
“It’s unusual that we haven’t gotten any calls,” Oldham said, adding that the vehicle may not be as recognizable as in some other hit-and-run cases because no damage is expected to have occurred from the accident. “We usually get a lot of tips.”
According to police, the Dodge had pulled over to the side of the road when Golphin approached and opened the passenger side for a still-unknown reason. When he opened the door, the driver of the truck accelerated and Golphin fell to the ground.
The rear passenger side tires ran over Golphin, inflicting the serious injuries from which he later died.
The Dodge probably did not suffer any damage, a rarity in such accidents police said, making it harder to identify.
“I haven’t seen any where there’s a crash with a pedestrian where there’s not a whole lot of signs of damage,” Oldham said. “It’s obviously easier if there is damage done to the vehicle.”
Oldham said that the nature of the accident itself makes it unique.
“That is very rare,” Oldham said. “The way the crash occurred. He apparently fell down and was run over by the tires. That’s going to make it harder for this investigation but there is obviously somebody out there that knows what happened.”
Call Delaware State Police Troop 7 at (302) 644-5020 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 with any information about this accident.
