Beebe buys land in Clarksville
Beebe Medical Center’s long-time emergency services location in Millville may be moving a few miles westward, expanding and staying open year-round, at least as a walk-in clinic. Unable to provide off-season services at the existing, and relatively small, Millville Emergency Center, Beebe has purchased a 10-acre parcel in Clarksville (on Route 26, about one-half mile west of Route 17), with plans to move operations to that location.

The Dagsboro Planning and Zoning Commission wants results — not talk — from representatives for the General’s Green development. Frustrations bubbled at a March 14 meeting when representatives from the General’s Green community failed to meet the expectations of town commissioners.

Millville by the Sea inches to groundbreaking
Millville town council voted unanimously on Tuesday to approve the final site plan review of Phase I of the Millville by the Sea development, which, when finished, will add 2,495 homes to the town on a 606-acre plot on Route 17.

Sussex County Administrator Bob Stickels publicly announced his retirement – effective Nov. 1, 2006 — at the March 14 County Council meeting and earned a bit of an early roast from his colleagues in the process.

St. Ann’s community mourns priest
Parishioners at St. Ann’s Catholic Church mourned the loss of one of their priests this week, with the sudden death of Father Paul P. Iaia. The 75-year-old associate pastor had served at the Bethany Beach church for eight years and would have celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination this May.

Millville mayor gets land deal approved
Millville Mayor Gary Willey says that after 24 years on the town council he’s about ready to take a break and settle down to live quietly for a while in his new home — just outside the town’s limits. Willey said Saturday that he wasn’t prepared to foreswear bringing the property into Millville town limits over the long-term future, but for right now, he has no plans to do so. “Not at this time,” he stated.

Anyone who drives on Route 26 in Ocean View on a regular basis has surely noticed the two train cars sitting on the north side of the road about a half-mile from Bethany Beach.

Softball team looks to build on success
Last year, eight of the 14 Henlopen Conference softball teams were ranked in Delaware, and every indication points to a similar circumstance coming this season. The Indians made the state tournament last season but couldn’t get past Sussex Tech in the quarterfinals. This year’s team remains relatively intact (seven of nine returning starters) but will be without two of their most important players: All-Conference catcher Ravin Robinson and shortstop Jessica Spencer.

Lady Indians optimistic about season
The Indian River Girl’s soccer program received an early indication of how strong a season they may have after going 4-1-1 against some of the top teams in the state at Woodbridge’s play-day on March 11.

Lions falls short to Chiefs
Destiny is often mentioned in reference to athletic competition, but it almost never plays any clear part in the end result. Down three games and on the verge of elimination from the 2004 American League Championship Series, the Boston Red Sox rallied to beat the New York Yankees in four straight games and eventually went on to beat the St. Louis Cardinals in a quick four-game series to end their 88-year drought without winning a World Series.

Warhawks miss chance at win
The Baltimore Nightmare Diamond League football team was in Sussex County on March 5 and it’s keeping the Warhawks up at night — especially after they missed two fourth-quarter field goals in a 15-12 loss.
