Lady Indians notch first win

Charne Rayne goes up for two in the Lady Indians 46-43 win over Lake Forest. The Lady Indians scored their first win of the season.

The varsity Lady Indian’s basketball team ended their season-long losing skid on Jan. 9 with a 46-43 win over Lake Forest. They nearly had two consecutive wins, but their victory was instead sandwiched with two tough conference losses, to Delmar and Smyrna.

They lost to Delmar 29-27 on Jan. 6 in a comeback effort and then to Smyrna, 52-38. But the recent success has sparked optimism and has rejuvenated the team.

Head Coach Summer Chorman said that because her team is so young, they lack the experience to grit out the tough games at the end. But that may soon be at an end, according to guard Charne Rayne.

“The monkey is off our back now,” exclaimed Rayne. “Everybody knows now that we can win games.”

“Our win against Lake Forest was similar to the loss to Delmar — we were up and they came back. But we learned how to fight them off for the win,” said Chorman.

Rayne and fellow guard Abi Buchler hit critical free-throws (4-6 combined) in the fourth quarter to put them over the top for the win. Michelle Givans led the Lady Indians with a team-high 12 points and Jasmine Holden rebounded and chipped in with eight points, despite missing shots early and often in the first half.

Though they won the game against Lake Forest, Chorman noted that there were plenty of lessons to be learned before squaring off with Milford on Jan. 12 and St. Thomas More on Jan. 14.

“We’re still rushing our shots and if we’re up by 10 or 12 points, then we need to slow the game down,” Chorman said.

Holden missed seven first-half shots because she was out of position. But she applied her coaches’ advice and squared up to the basket for four big buckets.

“It was frustrating because I wasn’t making my shots, but Coach Chorman told us to square up and shoot. So I just tried to get open or get the rebound and try again,” explained Holden.

Chorman also expressed some concern about their man-defense and noted that was the primary reason for losing the game to Smyrna.

“We need to work on our positioning on defense, because we gave up 10 to 12 points against Smyrna,” Chorman said.

The Lady Indians were set to square off with Milford at home on Jan. 12 and at St. Thomas More on Jan. 14, at 2:30 p.m.
