Police Corner
By Pfc. Joanna Robertson
P.I.O. Bethany Beach Police Dept.
I am pleased to announce that our department appointed the first Officer of the Quarter for the year 2005.
George “Danny” Steele holds the rank of lieutenant with Bethany Beach Police Department. This U.S. Army veteran has been in law enforcement for 31 years, starting with the Ocean View Police Department, before moving to South Bethany Police, Frankford Police (part-time) and, finally, coming to work with Bethany’s Police Department. I had the privilege of being the lieutenant’s partner and let me tell you the man has experience.
Right after I graduated from the police academy, I though that police work consisted of catching “bad guys,” solving big crimes and chasing stolen cars.
The lieutenant showed me that police work is working for the average citizen, talking to people, listening to them and, most of all, always being available and visible.
He asked, “Why do you want to fight crime if you can just prevent it?”
Lt. Steele is a wise man. It is no wonder that throughout the years he has held such positions as firearms instructor, operations officer, records officer, field training officer and shift commander.
On March 30, 2005 he apprehended three juveniles who tried to set a house on fire. Lt. Steele’s devotion to thoroughly patrolling every street in town prevented big property damage and may have saved lives.
Law enforcement is not the only thing that inspires Lt. Steele; he also stays active in the VFW, hoping to someday become the VFW state sommander.
Danny enjoys his free time as well, whether spending it on a boat with his wife, Patricia, or simply working around his house in Millville. He has two children from his first marriage who reside in Millsboro.
