Austin Wynns was the hero for Delmarva on Tuesday, July 8, driving in teammate Creede Simpson on a ninth-inning RBI shot to the mound, to give the Shorebirds a 3-2 victory over the West Virginia Power.

The ’Birds struck early in the first inning of that game, with Simpson knocking a double to left field and scoring Jeff Kemp. Chance Sisco added an RBI on the next play, to score Drew Dosch.

Despite the early lead, Delmarva would only manage two more hits off West Virginia pitcher Dovydas Neverauskas, who pitched a season-high seven innings.

The Power would score on an error and a JaCoby Jones home run to even the score. Jones now has six home runs in his last eight games (as of Coastal Point press time on Wednesday, July 9).

Headed into the ninth inning with the score still 2-2, the game started to come together for Delmarva. Simpson got on base after being hit by the pitch. Sisco singled to put a second runner on. Then Wynns hit one off the plate that bounced high in the air, and Simpson got to home plate before the throw did, for the win.

Shorebirds pitcher Alex Santana recorded his first win with the team in the victory.

Delmarva was set to face West Virginia again on Wednesday, July 9, before starting a seven game road series that will span eight days in series against Lakewood and Greensboro. They’ll return home on Friday, July 18, for a four-game series against Hagerstown.
