The woes continued for the Delmarva Shorebirds last week, as they started a five-game losing streak against the Lakewood BlueClaws and the Greensboro Grasshoppers, sending the ’Birds spiraling down to the bottom of the South Atlantic League Northern Division.

At Coastal Point press time on Wednesday, Aug. 6, Delmarva was tied for last place with the BlueClaws, at 18-27 on the second half of the season — each team 10.5 games behind division leader Greensboro. The Shorebirds had also notably lost nine of their last 10 games.

Unfortunately for fans, the losing tract came during a promotion-heavy week at Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, but the Shorebirds’ faithful did get to witness one win, last Wednesday, July 30, when Delmarva started a seven-game home stand in shut-out fashion — knocking off Lakewood, 4-0.

That game snapped a five-game losing streak, only to have another begin the next night.

Nonetheless, ’Birds pitcher Luis Gonzalez put together an impressive performance from the mound, extending his streak of not allowing a run to 20 and 1/3 innings. Gonzalez notched seven strikeouts in the matchup. The shutout marked Delmarva’s ninth on the season.

The Shorebirds had the day off on Wednesday, Aug. 6, but were set to hit the road to again face Lakewood on Thursday, Aug. 7, to mark the beginning of a five-game road stint.

After that, Delmarva will return home to face Washington Nationals affiliate the Hagerstown Suns from Monday, Aug. 11, to Wednesday, Aug. 13, for a brief three-game home series. All of the games at Perdue Stadium are scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.
