School board filing deadline arrives today

The Indian River School Board elections may be a few months off, but the registration time for those running for seats is slim. Eligible candidates who wish to vie for the positions have until 4:30 p.m. today, Friday, March 7, to do so. As of Wednesday, March 5, only the four incumbents have registered for the available seats, representing three-year terms in three districts.

Nina Lou Bunting has filed for re-election in District 3. Donald Hattier is running for re-election in District 4, and Reginald L. Helms and Donna M. Mitchell are both aiming to continue representing the two available seats in District Five.

If unopposed when today’s deadline passes, the four will reclaim their positions for three more years, beginning July 1, 2008, and extending until June 30, 2011.

The Indian River School District is the only one in Sussex County with three-year terms. Other districts, such as Laurel, Seaford, Cape Henlopen and Delmar, operate on five-year terms.

Qualified applicants can seek filing forms from the Department of Elections for Sussex County in the office of the department at 119 N. Race St. in Georgetown, or at online at http://electionssc.delaware.gov.

Eligible voters in the election — if one is held – must be at least 18, possess U.S. citizenship and reside or own property within the school district. The election date has been set for Tuesday, May 13, 2008.
