Richard Joseph Handlir, 88

Richard Joseph Handlir, 88, of Sterling, Va., formerly of Millville, Del., passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, at his home. He was a United States Army staff sergeant, Service Battery, 771st Field Artillery Battalion during World War II. He loved watching the Baltimore Orioles and enjoyed music, dancing, fishing, crabbing, the beach, gardening, hunting, treasure hunting, bird watching, playing baseball and softball, spending time outdoors and being with his friends and family.

Handlir was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ann Handlir; and his beloved wife, Elizabeth Marie Handlir. He was the loving and devoted father of Diana M. Takagi of Sterling, Va.; proud grandfather of Lynda Kovach and her husband John, Brian Takagi and his wife Jennifer, and Laura Burns and her husband Evan; great-grandfather of Katelyn and Jack Kovach, Christopher and Amanda Takagi and Clare Burns.

Funeral services were scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, and a graveside service with military honors was scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, Del. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to Capital Hospice, 6565 Arlington Blvd., Suite 501, Falls Church, VA 22042.
