Back in the day, people would kick up their heels at community dances hosted by local fire departments. The Roxana Volunteer Fire Company will reignite the tradition Friday, Jan. 17, as the RVFC Ladies Auxiliary hosts a “Redneck Get Down” dance.

“Way back when, the fire houses used to hold dances, and they used to be a lot of fun,” said organizer Trish Apgar-Saunders. “It’s wintertime. We just got over the holiday. Everybody needs to relax.”

After dinner, from 6 to 8 p.m., people can dance until midnight with the Dirt Road Outlawz country band.

“They’re a great band. They’re really a good group of guys,” Apgar-Saunders said.

The dance is BYOB, but no glass containers are allowed, and guests must be 21 to attend. They BYOB rule makes things easier on the Ladies Auxiliary, she said, but still makes it more of a party for people who want to drink. Of course, the organizers will make sure people are safe.

“We’re not going let you walk out of there stumbling. We’re not there for this reason, [but] for a good time, to enjoy the music, to enjoy the fellowship,” she said. “I’ve been to several. It’s a good time.”

The ladies themselves will prepare hot roast beef sandwiches, pork sandwiches, mashed potatoes, green beans and macaroni-and-cheese for the dinner.

In addition to offering a good time to those attend, the fundraiser will help the Ladies Auxiliary’s mission to support the firefighters, whether it’s buying new equipment or cooking for them after six-hour fire calls.

Tickets for the Redneck Get Down must be purchased beforehand, by contacting Trish at (302) 436-5705, Julie at (302) 381-4838 or Nellie at (302) 344-4924. Couples’ tickets cost $30, and single tickets cost $20.
