Paddle Second Chance to raise funds for veterans’ charity
Organizers of Paddle Second Chance (formerly Paddle Fenwick) announced this week the second annual Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) board day of “fun racing and fund raising for a worthy cause,” Operation Second Chance (OSC). OSC is a non-profit 501(c) organization committed to serving wounded combat veterans’ and their families’ recovery and transition back to active duty or into civilian life.
This year’s event will kick off on Friday, June 27, with paddler registration, packet pickup and a Happy Hour at The Starboard in Dewey Beach (www.thestarboard.com). Race day will be Saturday, June 28, at Holts Landing State Park near Millville, featuring a 5-mile course for “fast and furious” paddlers and a 2.5-mile run for the “fun and festive” paddlers.
Holts Landing is a spectator-friendly venue, so the public is welcome to come out and cheer on their favorite paddlers. Following the race events, PSC will wrap up with an awards ceremony and community picnic for all those in attendance.
Coming off a successful 2013 inaugural launch of Paddle Second Chance (114 paddler participants and more than $30,000 raised) a Delmarva tradition has been born, organizers said.
“We are excited about the prospects of making Paddle Second Chance 2014 even bigger and better with the support of a gracious and fun-loving local and national SUP community,” said Walt Ellenberger, PSC chairperson.
The returning national headline sponsor is Boardworks (www.boardworkssup.com), and early local sponsors include Delmarva Board Sports (www.delmarvaboardsportadventures.com), Walk On Water Paddleboard Company (www.walkonwatersupco.com) and LandShark/NKS Distributors. Organizers are also seeking sponsorship from local residents and businesses.
Paddle Second Chance 2014 is officially open for “early paddler” registration.
