Outstanding Indian -- Karlie Smith
Indian River sophomore swimmer Karlie Smith earned her second state-qualifying time for the season this past Tuesday, Dec. 20, as the Indians hosted Sussex Tech. She has recorded five personal bests so far this year, and has set two individual records for the swimming program at the high school. She is currently the only member of the Lady Indians’ swim team who has made the state cuts, having done so in the 50-meter freestyle and 100-meter breaststroke events. In addition to two first-place finishes on Tuesday, she also started off the 200-meter freestyle relay in which the IRHS team took first place and broke the school record, too.
Coastal Point “Karlie works very hard to improve her times,” said head coach Donna Smith. “She’s only one second off from qualifying for states in the 100-meter freestyle, too. She’s been a great motivator for the rest of the team, as well.”
