Ocean to Bay Bike Tour offers weekend events for 25th anniversary
The Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce announced this week that PNC Bank is the presenting sponsor of the 25rd Annual Ocean to Bay Bike Tour. The silver anniversary of the tour, scheduled for Saturday, April 26, is an opening ride to the Mid-Atlantic cycling season and offers something for beginners and experienced cyclists alike.
The award-winning event, organized by the Chamber, offers cyclists a 5-, 30- or 50-mile and Metric Century scenic route designed to create a relaxing ride on flat terrain and treasures along the beaches, bays and beyond.
“With the Ocean to Bike Tour celebrating its 25th anniversary, the Chamber wanted to make it a full weekend for the 2,500 cyclists and their families and friends,” said Chamber Executive Director Kristie Maravalli. “The Bike Tour, with its new addition of the metric centric ride, is, of course, the marquee event. However, the inaugural events of the Bike Tour Expo on Friday, the Ocean to Bay 4-Miler on Sunday and ‘Continue the Tour’ throughout the weekend, the Quiet Resorts will be a fun and festive place to be the last weekend in April.”
Besides the Metric Century route option, new to commemorate the silver anniversary is the Voler 25th Anniversary Jersey that can be delivered. Also, to aid in a festive atmosphere, the party begins Friday from noon to 8 p.m. at the Bike Tour Expo, at which riders will be able to do packet pickup and some last minute shopping from local vendors. The Continue the Tour pass will give riders a $5 dollar voucher to use in the expo, post-party tent and Chamber businesses in the Quiet Resorts community.
To make it a full weekend affair, the Inaugural Ocean to Bay 4-Miler, presented by Magnolia’s restaurant, will take place on Sunday, April 28, starting at 9 a.m. Participants will run through Fresh Pond State Park and receive a full post-race breakfast buffet, as well as a 2014 Splash Beach Towel. The 4-miler will start at Magnolia parking lot, and the cost to run is $25.
“Thank you to our Presenting Sponsor PNC Bank and post-party sponsor Coastal Tented Events. Now, our cyclists will be able to gather after the ride to share their adventures from the day and enjoy music, giveaways and refreshments under a tent before venturing out to see what the businesses of Bethany Beach have to offer,” added Lauren Weaver, event and member relations manager.
Anyone interested in participating in the one or both of the Bike Tour or 4-miler should register soon, representatives said, as the Chamber is anticipating another sold-out event. Cyclists can register by mail, email or online at ww.thequietresorts.com, or visiting the Chamber prior to the event.
In March and April, the cost to participate is $65 for individual registrants and $55 each for teams of four or more. Each cyclist will receive a fully supported tour, a silver tech shirt, three fully stocked rest stops, access to the bicycle expo, discounts at local businesses and the “Continue the Tour” party.
