Laurence L. ‘Larry’ Atkinson, 73
Laurence L. “Larry” Atkinson, 73, of Selbyville, Del., formerly of Burlington, N.J., passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at home. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had been a salesman for Sears from 1953 to 1991.

Atkinson was preceded in death by his parents, Owen and Elsie Marshall Atkinson; and his wife, Blanche I. Atkinson. He is survived by three step-sons, George Finley of Frisco, N.C., Gary Meredith of Maple Shade, N.J. and Glenn Meredith of Sicklerville, N.J.; a step-daughter, Sandra F. Hartmann of Voorhees, N.J.; one niece and one nephew.

Services and burial were private.

Ralph E. Cook, 67
Ralph E. Cook, 67, of Selbyville, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, Md. He worked in the construction business for many years.

Cook was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Hazel Jackson Cook; a step-son, Louis Powers; and a brother, Eugene Cook. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie L. Cook; a step-son, Richard Powers of Georgia; a brother, David Cook of Pennsylvania; three grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

Services and burial were private.

Evelyn J. Johnson, 78
Evelyn J. Johnson, 78, of Selbyville, formerly of Miami and Newport Richey, Fla., passed away Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, at the Berlin Nursing and Rehab Center in Berlin, Md. She lived in Southeast Asia for eight years during the 1960’s. She was a homemaker and an avid masters bridge player.

Johnson was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Eveline Smart Lumpkins. She is survived by her sons, Robert B. Dye and Kenneth B. Dye, both of Selbyville, and Wayne H. Johnson of Ocean City, Md.; a daughter, Lynda L. Johnson of Selbyville; two grandchildren, Sarah Dye and Lauren Anne Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.

Services and burial were private.

Nancy C. Shope, 71
Nancy C. Shope, 71, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, in Connecticut. A longtime resident of Ocean View, Del., she was an active hospital volunteer, president of the Woman’s Auxiliary in Kent, Ohio, and worked at Sea Crest Gallery in Bethany Beach. She enjoyed the beach with her family and friends. She and her husband Don lived in Alliance, Ohio; Pittsburgh, Pa.; Bel Air, Md.; and Kent, Ohio; before retiring to Ocean View.

Shope was preceded in death by her husband, Don Shope. She is survived by her children, Don and Cynthia Shope of Clifton, Va., and Natalie and Ryan Griffin of Bolton, Conn.; her grandchildren, Dan, Andrew, Keller and Kaia; her brothers, Carl, Bob and Richard; and her sisters, Evelyn and Mary.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Mariner’s Bethel United Methodist Church on Central Avenue in Ocean View. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

Woodrow S. ‘Bootie’ Smith, 52
Woodrow S. “Bootie” Smith, 52, who lived near Seaford, passed away Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, at his home. He was a maintenance mechanic for Townsend’s Processing Plant in Millsboro for 15 years. He was a member of the Tabernacle of Praise in Seaford, where he served as deacon. He was a kind and jolly person who loved life, was devoted to his children, loved hunting and playing the guitar.

Smith is survived by his parents, Robert and Elizabeth Taylor Smith; two daughters, Rebecca Fisher of Virginia Beach, Va., and Nykia Purnell and her husband Daniel of Frankford, Del.; three step-daughters, Katrina Rogers of Millsboro, Shareta Spencer of Delmar and Lakisha Snead of Millsboro; two brothers, Robert Smith Jr. and his wife Linda of Millsboro, and Eugene Smith and his wife Michelle of Millsboro; five grandchildren, Nakayla Spencer, Leah Snead, Cornell, Hassan and Kyla Corbin; aunts, nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at the Trinity Holiness Church on Delaware Avenue in Frankford, where friends may call at noon. Interment will be in the St. John A.M.E. Church Cemetery in Bishopville, Md.

Betty Mitchell Bland Turner, 76
Betty Mitchell Bland Turner, 76, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., passed away Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, at St. Lucie Medical Center. Born in Ocean View, Del., she and her first husband James T. Bland lived in Ocean View until moving to Florida in 1967. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Prior to and during her illness, she was a great homemaker who loved her family dearly.

Turner was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence E. and Cecile (Tyre) Mitchell; her first husband, James T. Bland; a brother, Horace Mitchell; and two sisters, Nellie Davis and Dorothy Hancock. She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Curtiss H. Turner; three daughters, Linda B. Turner, Barbara B. Kearns and Laura B. Acosta, all of Palm Beach County, Fla.; five grandchildren, Donald, Trinity, Tommy III, and twins Alex and Amanda; eight great-grandchildren, T.J., Brittany, Wade, Kindall, Cameron, Draven, Pheonix and Thomas IV; a sister, Ann Baker of Delaware; two brothers, Harvey Mitchell and Tom Mitchell, both of Delaware.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at noon at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services on Thatcher Street in Frankford, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Georges Cemetery in Clarksville.
