Millville fire deemed arson by marshal
An arson fire occurred in the early hours of Feb. 22 at JS Bennett & Son in Millville, causing an estimated $30,000 worth of damage, according to authorities.
Millville Volunteer Fire Company responded at 4:17 a.m. where they were able to get the fire under control in about 20 minutes.
“We had 29 individuals from our department who responded,” said Bob Powell, public information officer for the Millville Volunteer Fire Company. “Three individuals from Bethany Beach who came here to [our station] to do a standby with one of their pieces of equipment.”
Powell said that along with 29 members of the department, six apparatuses responded to the call sent by the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center.
The fire heavily damaged six vehicles and caused minor damage to an outbuilding on the property. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
Delaware State Fire Marshal’s were called to the scene and determined the cause of the fire to be arson.
“We eliminated any accidental causes,” explained Deputy Fire Marshal Harry Miller, “and determined that it was arson.”
Powell said he hopes that those who may know something about the fire will go to the authorities.
“Hopefully someone, if they know of an individual or individuals, who it was, will make a phone call and they can get charged,” said Powell.
Those who may have information regarding the incident are asked to contact Delaware Crime Stoppers at (800) TIP-3333 or the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office, (302) 856-5600.
