Millsboro Chamber offers scholarship to seniors
The Greater Millsboro Chamber of Commerce is offering Dagsboro and Millsboro high-school seniors the chance to receive one of two $1,000 scholarships.
“You do have to be attending a two- or four-year higher-learning center,” explained Amy Simmons, the Chamber’s executive director.
Simmons said the Chamber has been offering the scholarship to seniors for more than 10 years, initially $500 to only one senior and later $1,000. This year, the Chamber’s board of directors decided to award two scholarships.
“For the past three years, when we’ve sat down to pick one person, there was always a second person that was so close,” said Simmons. “We thought this year we had the financial means to give two away scholarships.”
The scholarship application process is open to those who live in the 19966 and 19939 ZIP codes and requires the student to write an essay and fill out an application form.
“We are interested in what kind of things you’ve done in school, other than your grades — community activities, involvement in activities in the school, those sorts of things.”
Applications are available in the guidance offices at Indian River High School, Sussex Central High School, Sussex Technical High School, Delmarva Christian High School and Worchester Preparatory School.
The scholarships are funded by the Chamber’s annual golf tournament and other events, such as the upcoming Spelling Bee competition.
Simmons said the scholarship recipients are chosen by a committee of four people and that the students will find out if they receive the scholarship at their senior awards night.
She said the Chamber feels strongly about supporting area students in furthering their education.
“First and foremost, the Chamber as a whole feels that, in today’s society, kids really need to further their education past high school,” she said. “In most jobs around here, you do need some form of education past high school. With more education comes your economic status and your ability to pay bills.”
The application deadline is April 25, and Simmons said she hopes many area students will apply for the scholarships.
“Every year we see an increase in the number of applicants. Last year, we had 30,” said Simmons. “I’m hoping to see more, especially since we’ll be giving two away.”
