Mary Ann Williams Starita, 76

Mary Ann Williams Starita, formerly Mary Ann Williams Defoe, 76, of Frankford, Del., passed away Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, after a short illness.

Starita was born and raised in Lewistown, Pa., and earned a bachelor’s degree from University of Delaware and a master’s degree from Towson University. Starita was a lifelong educator and enjoyed teaching English and literature at various Delaware and Maryland schools for more than 30 years. She was past president of AARP in Sussex County and was an active member of Mariner’s Bethel United Methodist Church. Starita was remembered as a giving and loving mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, aunt and dear friend who will be missed.

Starita was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Florence Williams, brother Charlie and sister Helen. She is survived by her children, Daniel Defoe, Nancy O’Hagan, Diane Proffitt and David Defoe; six grandchildren, a great-grandson; her sister, Hazel Varner; and extended family members.

A celebration of life was scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Mariner’s Bethel United Methodist Church in Ocean View, Del. Arrangements are by Melson Funeral Services.
