Mariner’s Bethel offering free lunches at new soup kitchen

Anyone having some trouble making ends meet can find some relief every Thursday at Mariner’s Bethel United Methodist Church, thanks to the new Feed My Sheep soup ministry. The weekly soup kitchen will serve a free lunch to anyone from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursdays at the church in Ocean View.

Two types of soup will be served each week, beginning Oct. 6, said Brian Mushrush, chairman of the program. Other services may be offered later in the year.

“We just want anybody to come in and eat if they’re hungry – physically or spiritually,” Mushrush said.

Glenda Yoor, committee co-chair, recalled how the idea sprouted at a springtime community outreach meeting.

“I said, ‘Why can’t we reach people by feeding them?’” Yoor recalled. “We have this kitchen that’s empty all week long.”

Brian and Tammy Mushrush had long felt there was a community need – especially in the tough economic times since the recession began.

“It’s not us three – it’s going to take a lot of people,” Brian Mushrush said. “It’s the church and the community doing this, the feet and the hands of the Lord in our community.”

Mushrush said he had heard statistics that placed the numbers of homeless people living near Rehoboth Beach in the hundreds and at more than 1,000 in Salisbury, Md.

Paired with a difficult economy, the start of a soup ministry seemed well-timed.

Parishioners registered to help until their numbers soared to more than 70 people. Volunteers now represent Mariner’s Bethel, Millville United Methodist Church and the Parish of St. Ann.

“It’s not just the Mariner’s soup kitchen anymore; it’s a community soup kitchen,” Yoor said.

Volunteers can also deliver food to people who don’t leave home or who cannot visit the church during the soup kitchen’s regular operating hours.

Community members can help by donating food – milk and other soup ingredients – or by notifying the church of families in need.

To learn more or to obtain meals, visit during Feed My Sheep operating hours, on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For other needs, contact the church at (302) 539-9510.

Mariner’s Bethel United Methodist Church is located at the corner of Route 26 and Central Avenue in Ocean View.
