Lady Indians lash Laurel for last-second win
The Indian River High school girls’ basketball team ended a five-game road series this week, falling to Red Lion on Friday, Jan. 24, but finishing strong on Tuesday, Jan. 28, with a 30-29 win against Laurel High School.
Junior guard Taylor Billinger led the scoring for the Lady Indians against Red Lion, with 14 points, draining a three-pointer and adding seven rebounds and two steals. Senior Alex Myers and junior point guard Maggie Allison accounted for the rest of the points in the 35-31 non-conference loss, with nine and six, respectively. Myers also tallied seven rebounds and Allison added six, as did junior Patrina Bratton.
Going down to the last seconds, the Lady Indians led for most of the game — before the Lady Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run to take a 29-28 lead in the last minute of the fourth quarter.
Myers made it 30-29 with 10 seconds left on the clock, to all but seal the victory for Indian River, which improved to 5-7 on the season and 3-4 in conference play with the win.
The girls return home this Friday, Jan. 31, playing against Delmar High School at 4 p.m. The last time they faced the Lady Wildcats at Delmar, they pulled out a 28-17 victory.
They’ll continue their week-long four-game home series against Sussex Central on Tuesday, Feb. 4, and against Milford on Thursday, Feb. 6. Both of those games begin at 6 p.m.
