This year, the race will expand to accommodate 1,000 runners and walkers, but Race Director Rick Hundley still expects the race to sell out.

“It doesn’t appear that there will be day-of registration,” Hundley said after explaining that the race already had nearly 750 pre-registered voters with more than two weeks until race day. “We’re getting between 25 and 50 registrations a day.”

“We’re going to be sold out at 1,000 participants. The important thing for people to know is that, if they’re going to run this race, they need to sign up immediately. It sold out last year a week before the event.”

Hundley, along with Ernie Felici, Tim Bamforth and the rest of the Sea Shore Striders organization, are more than used to selling out runs — but Hundley noted that this one is for a particularly good cause.

“I just had a customer in here last week, and the gentleman has Stage 4 liver cancer,” he said of a family utilizing Justin’s Beach House last week that ventured into his Bethany Beach restaurant Baja Beach House Grill. “They were staying at the house for a week, and we had a great chat. They were very appreciative of everything Justin’s Beach House has done for them.”

The house offers retreat for patients dealing with cancer and their families.

“It’s a great cause,” he went on. “For years, they were fundraising to raise the funds for building that house. It’s come to fruition. It’s there. Fundraising now is more important than ever. Its expense — it’s a worthy cause.”

Hundley also noted that, while they may not lack for participants, when it comes to bringing off the event, volunteers, sponsors and donations are always needed and appreciated.

“Always looking for volunteers. We’re always looking for sponsors of the event and donations,” he emphasized. “Any food or beverages, anything you think might be useful to the runners.”

After the race there will be food, a DJ, and awards given out at the Bethany Beach bandstand.
