IR grads put in the work to boost funds

Recent Indian River High School graduates Catie Cummings, Ellen Dupont and Krista Littleton are asking the public for help in raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society — and, ultimately, for recovering IR student, cancer patient and friend Elizabeth Shoemaker.

Cummings, Dupont and Littleton are racing — literally — to raise $5,000 in order to run a marathon in Anchorage, Alaska, on June 23, from which half of their entrance money goes directly to cancer research.

Indian River High School hosted a Valentine’s Day fundraiser and sold T-shirts sporting the phrase “262MIFORESHOE” — but the three are currently working to raise additional funds at local restaurants.

The trio of Indian River alumni each needs to secure at least $1,200 of the $5,000 total by March 30 to qualify for the marathon. And, since Dupont and Littleton both attend college outside of the local area, Cummings has shouldered much of the fundraising burden on their behalf, because she knows that the local community will help them achieve their goal to help out one of their own.

Littleton’s portion of the total was supplemented on Feb. 22 by the first of in series of restaurant fundraisers, held at the Chalkboard Tavern and Grille. With the support of diners there — and at the coming fundraising events at other local eateries — the three hope to bring their entrance money search successfully to the finish line.

Starting March 14, the local community can throw even more of their support behind these young women, at Steakhouse 26 in the Millville Town Center. Steakhouse 26 will hold a fundraiser to benefit Cummings portion of the total from 4 to 10 p.m. on that Wednesday.

Then, on March 30, the Kool Bean Café in Ocean View will host the first of two fundraisers at that venue, to benefit Dupont’s share. They’re offering a six-course Alaskan-themed dinner, and reservations for the event are a must. On May 6, Kool Bean will also offer a brunch fundraiser for the trio.

The Cottage Café will also host a fundraiser to support the three ladies, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, on April 25.

Currently, they have four fundraisers set up through May 6, and they have tentatively set up about a half-dozen more at other restaurants in the days leading up to their departure date in mid-to late-June.
