Hot rods to celebrate 30 years in Ocean City
Shimmering chrome, bold paint jobs and purring engines... Next weekend, some of the most spectacular hot rods and unique automobiles on the Eastern seaboard will be rolling into Ocean City, Md., for the 30th Annual Hot Rod and Custom Car Show. The Ocean City Convention Center will fill up with more than 160 automobiles on March 13 and 14, and host celebrity appearances, entertainment and more in what promises to be one of the most anticipated automotive events of the year for the area.
“It’s the 30th anniversary,” noted Meredith Hennen, with Ocean City’s Special Events Productions, “so we wanted to bring something special to this year’s show.”
The 2010 Hot Rod and Custom Car Show will feature a stroll down memory lane, with a slideshow highlighting the event over the past three decades.
“We’ve seen a lot over the years,” Hennen added, “and it’s nice to look back on it all.”
This year’s show will feature actress Erika Eleniak, who starred as Shauni in the television hit series “Baywatch” and was also featured in movies such as “The Beverly Hillbillies” and “Under Siege.” Eleniak will be available both days for meet-and-greets and photo opportunities.
The car show itself will feature plenty of classics and modern head-turners. Included in the lineup are the legendary drag-racer Sam Auxier Jr.’s 1969 Ford Ultra Stock Mustang, recently featured in Mustang Monthly magazine, as well as the 1927 “Kid Stuff” Ford Roadster, a 1970 Hemi Cuda and the “Life’s a Beach” ’37 Ford Woodie, among plenty of others. The Ocean City Convention Center fills up quickly each year as registrants make sure to grab a prime spot on the floor.
“We have lots of people who come back each year and always find great new cars each time, too,” said Hennen.
The Ocean City Hot Rod and Custom Car Show kicks off another exciting year for automobile enthusiasts in Ocean City. In May, thousands of admirers will be rolling to the shore for the highly anticipated Cruisin’ weekend.
“Ocean City has really become a fun location for cruisers to head to,” said Hennen. “We keep events like this going, even in the off-season. They’ve really helped to bring in a good crowd and allow people to show off their automobiles.”
Show hours next weekend will run from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 13, and from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 14, at the Ocean City Convention Center, located on 40th Street and Coastal Highway. Special Shamrock Souvenirs will be given out to the first 2,000 paid spectators. General admission costs $10, and seniors and students pay $8. Children younger than 5 can attend for free.
