For 15 years, Richard Holt’s Payless Furniture was a staple of the Millsboro area — but now, with a new owner and a new name, Holt Furnishings is offering something more.

The result is Holt Furnishings. The store is located in the same building as her father’s Payless Furniture, but it is not the same store.“We have a lot of beach customers still, with second homes and rentals,” said Audrey Holt Harkins, daughter of the late Richard Holt and current owner of the store. But for “most of our old customers — Payless is gone to them.”

While the name Payless may indeed be gone, the store is not, and still operates at the same location off Route 113. Harkins is still offering many of the same brands and is honoring her father’s legacy — not only by using the family name for the new store, but by carrying on his business ideals, as well.

“He used to always say, ‘Run the business so you can sleep good every night,” recalled a teary-eyed Harkins. “I kept the ‘Holt’ for a tribute to him.”

Though she has worked in the business in some capacity for about 25 years, and for her father directly for seven years when the store was Payless — this is Harkins’ first venture on her own.

“I grew up going to furniture markets [with my dad] when I was on break from school,” recalled Harkins of her lengthy experience in the furniture business. “My very first job was working for him and my mom in a furniture store. I ran [the store] when he was alive, but it’s still different. I still had my dad here to ask questions when I wanted to.”

While Harkins wants her old customers to know that the store still incorporates the same products and ideals that made it successful for 15 years, she has also been adding some new features.

“We have some of the same brands, and we changed some of the things we had going on before,” she explained. “We updated it.”

In addition to some new furniture brands, the store now offers a variety of other products, ranging from jewelry and scarves to quilts, home decor and baby products.

“We definitely have the coastal, we have cottage, we have everyday, we have transitional, we have a little bit of everything for every room,” Harkins said of the new store’s style,” and we now have the new gift area.”

Harkins “stylishly affordable” store is still located at 28632 DuPont Blvd. (Route 113), Unit 10, in Millsboro from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. They can also be reached via their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/HoltFurnishingsandDecor or by calling (302) 934-1665.
