County, Discover combine to help whole region

Sussex County Administrator Todd Lawson dropped a little bombshell for those in attendance at the Sussex County Today & Tomorrow Conference on Wednesday, Oct. 25.

The County, in collaboration with Discover Bank, is partnering in the Grow America Fund to create a $4 million development loan to help draw businesses to Sussex County. Lawson explained that the loans will be available to businesses either looking to relocate to Sussex, or to grow their current operations, and will range from $250,000 to $1 million.

“With longer loan terms and below-market interest rates, the fund will help businesses stretch their dollars, stretch their cash flow and save thousands with lower monthly payments,” he continued.

This really is an example of Sussex County Council collaborating with other businesses to bring jobs and smart growth to Sussex County. Lawson also brought up the partnership between the Delaware Coastal Airport and Delaware Technical Community College to develop a program that trains a skilled workforce.

This is significant, and not just for the $4 million coming to help improve the County’s business landscape. It shows how important it is for communities to take ownership of their own futures, instead of waiting for State or federal help. Government, business and learning institutions can work hand-in-hand to target a region’s specific needs or weaknesses better than a larger entity that doesn’t know the area can.

We need more projects like this one, and less reliance on projects or stimulation efforts from “the outside.” Bravo, Sussex County.
