Bethany Beach to host disaster workshop Saturday

Hurricane season is again upon us and early indications are that it may well be a very active one. Hurricane and disaster planning is essential and should be a family event.

Disaster planning can help to minimize panic, increase your family’s comfort during an emergency and increase your chances of survival in a disaster. A little effort now can go a long way toward protecting you and your family later.

The Town of Bethany Beach will host a Family Disaster Preparedness and Delaware Animal Disaster Service workshop to be held on Saturday, August 16, 2008, starting at 10 a.m. The event will be held in the Bethany Beach Municipal Building (Town Hall) and will be presented by Delaware’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program (R.S.V.P.) group. All instructors are DEMA (Delaware Emergency Management Agency) certified.

Family Disaster Preparedness teaches participants how to develop a family disaster plan and disaster supply kit. The workshop provides answers to important questions such as:

• What does my family need to know about disaster preparedness?

• How can we contact one another if separated during a disaster?

• How much water should we have on hand for an emergency?

• What kinds of foods work best in a disaster supply kit?

• What tools and other supplies should we pull together to help us survive a disaster?

Participants in the workshop will receive a free booklet with disaster preparedness information specifically for Delaware. The booklet will also provide valuable tips for coping with a wide variety of natural and technological or terrorist emergencies.

The workshop is expected to last 190 minutes.

Those with questions may call the R.S.V.P. group at 302.856.5815 or the Town of Bethany Beach, Office of Public Safety, at 539-1000.
