Lasek returns again this year to compete in the 2014 Dew Tour Beach Championships. One of the most notable names at the 2014 Dew Tour Beach Championships held in Ocean City, Md., this weekend is also one of the most local to the area, as world renowned skateboarding pro Bucky Lasek is set to compete for yet another Dew Tour title.

Lasek, who grew up in Baltimore, Md., vacationed in Ocean City with his family frequently and competed in both amateur and regional events at the Ocean City Skatepark.

“We would vacation there very regularly,” said Lasek of his trips to the beach. “I’ve competed in all of the amateur contest at the Ocean City Skatepark. They held the national regionals there.”

While Lasek’s stage is now certainly on a larger scale, the longtime skate pro is used to it, having racked up a dozen X-Games medals to go along with multiple Dew Tour and ASA Championships throughout his storied career.

That career began at the age of 12, when his bike was stolen and, to replace it, he got a skateboard for Christmas. Interestingly, the board was a model named for Steve Caballero — a skating legend who competed at the 2013 Dew Tour Beach Championships, as well.

Lasek caught his big break in 1988, when he made a name for himself with a section in “Public Domain,” a Powell Peralta video. He would get his own pro model just two years later.

Despite all of his success, he still gets amped to return to Ocean City to compete every year.

“The vibe with the bowl and vert on the beach, surrounded by a sea of skateboarding fans, is top-notch,” he described. “It’s very alive and loud. People come to have a good time, and the Dew Tour adds to the entertainment.”

This year, Lasek will compete in both the skate vert and bowl competitions, which are scheduled to begin on Thursday, June 26, at 5:30 p.m. and Friday, June 27, at 6 p.m., respectively.

“I’m recovering from a couple injuries, so I’m just looking forward to having a good time on my board,” Lasek said of this year’s events. “I have been working on a few new tricks, but time will tell if they are used here.”

No matter the outcome of this year’s competition, Lasek will still return to his roots afterwards and hit his favorite local waterpark.

“I love to hit up Jolly Roger for their karting and zip-lines,” he noted.
