Patricia L. “Pat” Shepherd, 69, of Showell, Md., died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017, at home. She was born in Berlin, Md., daughter of the late George W. Cathell and Mary (Mullen) Cathell.
Shepherd enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, playing bingo and going to the casinos. She supported area fundraising events and was a member of First Baptist Church in Berlin.
John E. Sparpaglione, 74, of Dagsboro, Del., died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, Del. He was born in Frankford, Del., son of the late Eddie C. Sparpaglione and Margaret E. (Donovan) Sparpaglione.
Sparpaglione served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and had been a grain operator for Townsend and Perdue.
Harriett J. Williams, 83, of Selbyville, Del., passed away peacefully on Dec. 23, 2016. She was born July 24, 1933, daughter of the late Lonnie Ray Jennings and Lillie Belle Jennings of Elizabeth City, N.C.
William F. Wood, 95, of Ocean View, Del., formerly of Kensington, Md., passed away on Monday, Dec. 26, 2016, at his home. He was born in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 6, 1921, son of the late John S. Wood and Nonie (Davis) Wood. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Jane H. Thompson, 85, of Ocean View, Del., and formerly of Wilmington, Del., passed away suddenly on Dec. 29, 2016, at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, surrounded by her family. She was born Jan. 15, 1931, daughter of the late Layton Gray and Jennie (Hemphill) Gray.
Gary P. Bickford, 69, of Frankford, Del., died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016, at his home.
He began his career in the Vietnam War era as a radio intercept analysis specialist for the U.S. Air Force. He was successful in his many employment paths. He ended his career as a maintenance contractor in Bethany Beach, Del.

Powell was a homemaker and a lifetime member of the Millville Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary.

E. Lewis Gray, 79, of Frankford, Del., passed away, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016, in his home. He was born March 15, 1937, a son of the late Everett Lewis Gray Sr. and Lettie Timmons Gray.
He was the former owner of Gray’s Towing and Gray’s Mobil Station in Frankford and a lifetime member of the Frankford Volunteer Fire Company.

Charles J. Bartlett, 85, of Frankford Del., former mayor of Bethany Beach (1991 to 1997) died Friday, Dec. 16, 2016. He was born in Washington, D.C., the son of the late Charles M. Bartlett and Margaret (Farrell) Bartlett. He was a graduate of Gonzaga High School, Georgetown University and Georgetown University Law Center, all in Washington D.C. He was a veteran of the Korean War.
Madlyn V. Banks, 94, of Dagsboro, Del., passed away Dec. 19, 2016, in Berlin, Md., with her family by her side. She was born in Dagsboro on Dec. 6, 1922, a daughter of the late Joseph Long and Sarah Turlington Long.
Banks was a secretary for Warren Banks and Dagsboro Electric for many years, until her retirement.
Roy James Anstead, 91, one of the last World War II submariners and a craftsman whose tool collection filled two sheds, a workroom and all the nooks and crannies of his house, died peacefully on Dec. 15, 2016, in hospice care and in the arms of his children. Anstead was born March 26, 1925, in Cresson, Pa., a small town driven by the lumber, railway and coal industries.
Maretta L. Wilson, 84, of Rehoboth Beach, Del. passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016, at Harbor Healthcare in Lewes, Del. She was the daughter of the late Nathaniel P. Marsh and Emma (Hudson) Marsh.
Wilson was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Wilson. She was the last of her immediate family. She is survived by several nieces, a brother-in-law, Wayne Wilson, and his wife, Phyllis.

W. Chudleigh “Chud” Reese, 81, passed away on Dec. 8, 2016. He was born to H. Wallace Reese and Henrietta Melson Reese on Sept. 3, 1935, in Philadelphia, Pa. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and a devoted friend.
