Delaware’s state fruit will take center stage at the annual Strawberry Festival & Craft Sale on Saturday, June 1, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., hosted by Indian River Senior Center in Millsboro. Admission is free to the event, which features food, sweets and more than 20 craft vendors.
“Over and all, it was a success last year, and I hope this year is even better,” said Barbara Harrison, a board member and festival chairperson.
Homemade wreaths, jewelry and home décor are just the beginning of the “very unique” gift items available for sale, Harrison said.
This is the second year the Strawberry Festival features vendors. It is a separate event from the senior center’s flea markets.
The senior center will sell food and bake-sale goods. Guests can purchase breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. and lunch 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., including hotdogs and hamburgers.
Hungry guests should save room for the dessert table, which features strawberries, ice cream and pound cake.
“The strawberry shortcake table is very popular,” Harrison said. “Everybody was thrilled. I mean, that table went over well!”
There are two contests with big prizes: a 50/50 raffle and the prize drawing. People need not be present to win.
First prize is $500; second prize is a three-day/two-night offseason hotel stay in Ocean City, Md.; and third prize is a family picnic cooler filled with $500 worth of prizes, including furniture, games and décor. Prize tickets cost $5 for six tickets.
“Come out and enjoy yourself, and have an awesome day!” said Harrison, also thanking the volunteers who make the festival a success: “Without the volunteers, things couldn’t be done.”
The festival will benefit programs at Indian River Senior Center, a nonprofit organization for senior-citizen members.
“We have different programs. They have a billiards team, they have a shuffleboard team, they play Bunco there, nickel poker, luncheons every Wednesday,” as well as having guest speakers, music, exercise classes, a library and golf league, said Harrison. “There’s a variety of things … if you want to join the center, and then it’s there for us.”
