Willie Hughes, 75, of Georgetown, Del., passed away on Dec. 15, 2017, at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford, Del. He was born on May 20, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pa., to the late William Hughes and Ella Mae Hammond Hughes.
Hughes enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 23, 1961. After his discharge from active duty, he went on to serve in the Army Reserves until his retirement on May 20, 2002. While serving as an Army recruiter, Hughes met and later married his wife of 39 years, Vera Fields Hughes. As a civilian, he worked as a surveyor for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and DNREC’s Division of Soil & Water Conservation until his retirement in 1990.
Hughes was a member of Mt. Zion Church in Georgetown. In the community, he devoted his time to the development and leadership of the youth as a member of the Jaycees, Georgetown Chapter; member of Pop Warner Board of Directors; and Big Brother volunteer for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Delaware.
A visitation was scheduled for Dec. 20, 2017, at Watson Funeral Home, followed by interment with military honors at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, both in Millsboro, Del. The Rev.
