Grace M. Layfield, 93, of Millsboro, Del., passed away peacefully, at home, on Jan. 12, 2019. She was born on March 5, 1925, in Millsboro, to the late Louder and Ethel Brasure Mitchell.
Layfield was the co-owner of Mitchell & Sons Inc. in Millsboro. She also worked at H.B. Mitchell’s for 17 years, as well as at Baker’s Hardware in Millsboro for many years.
Throughout her life, Layfield was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church, and supported numerous organizations and activities within the Millsboro community.
Gardening and flowers were a passion for Layfield. When not planting and pruning, she was creating floral arrangements. While traveling throughout the U.S. and in various parts of Europe, visits to beautiful gardens made her trips complete.
Layfield was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Bob, in 2009, and a daughter, Delores D. Hall, in 1984. She is survived by a son, Reginald M. Layfield and his wife, Donna, of Millsboro; a daughter, Deborah A. Ware and her husband, Les, of Hampton, Va.; three grandchildren, Mark B. Hall of Port Haywood, Va., Jennifer L. (Ware) Dyer of Nottingham, U.K., and Andrew M. Ware of Fairfax Station, Va.; and five great-granddaughters, D. Grace Hall, Eileen B. Hall, Lennon E. Ware, Charlie Mae Ware and Finley E. Dyer.
The family offered special thanks to Betty, Paula and Felicia for their dedicated care giving services over the last several years.
A visitation and funeral service were scheduled for Jan. 15, 2019, at Watson Funeral Home in Millsboro, Del., with interment at Millsboro Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Dr. James Van Der Wall. Floral tributes were welcome, in light of Layfield’s love of flowers, as were memorial contributions to any charity of the giver’s choice. Condolences may be sent online at www.watsonfh.com.
