The angels came for Ona Kalista, 101, and she passed away on Nov. 20, 2017. Her journey of 101 years began in 1916 in Scranton, Pa., and the final chapter was enjoyed in Huling Cove in Lewes, Del., and with family in Harbeson, Del.
Kalista was a kind and caring person who generously gave of her time and talents to help the sick and elderly wherever she lived. While working in Washington, D.C., in the 1940s, she spent her days off from work visiting wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
She was an inspiration to many as she fought cancer twice. She has a hand-sewn block on the quilt at the Tunnell Cancer Center as a survivor of more than 50 years. She said the key to her longevity was her strong faith and always having a song in her heart.
Kalista was preceded in death by her parents, husband and four brothers. She is survived by a son, Daniel Kalista of Lewes; her daughter, Janet Fogg and her husband, Eric, of Harbeson; and a granddaughter, Diana Fogg of Rehoboth Beach, Del.
A funeral was scheduled for Nov. 28, 2017, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Millsboro, Del., with interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Dagsboro, Del. Condolences may be sent online at www.melsonfuneralservices.com.
