James S. “Jim” Brown, 83, of Ocean View, Del., formerly of Succasunna, N.J., passed away and went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Nov. 17, 2017, at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in the Bronx, N.Y., on May 28, 1934, son of the late James Brown and Caroline (Hegan) Brown.
Brown proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, where he played the bagpipes for the U.S. Army Pipe & Drum Band. Brown retired from work as a carpet salesman in 1999, having served the entire East Coast.
He was a faithful member of Mariner’s Bethel United Methodist Church in Ocean View, where he sang tenor in the choir, and was also a past member of the Succasunna United Methodist Church and choir in New Jersey.
Brown loved music and could play the guitar, bagpipes and the trumpet. He was a member of the Nautical Sounds Barbershop Chorus — part of the main chorus and also in a quartet. Brown enjoyed living near the ocean, where he spent countless hours swimming. He was a very family-oriented man who would never miss one of his grandchildren’s sporting or musical events.
In addition to his parents, Brown was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Fergusson. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Frances Ann (Gibson) Brown; three children, Gregory Brown and his wife, Bonnie, of Elmwood Park, N.J., Leslie Edgar and her husband, John, of Alexandria, Va., and Christopher Brown of Ocean View; three grandchildren, Jack Edgar, Luke Edgar and Rory Edgar; and a sister, Caroline Grotz of Princeton Junction, N.J.
A funeral service was scheduled for Nov. 22, 2017, at Mariner’s Bethel U.M. Church in Ocean View, Del., with interment at the Succasunna U.M. Cemetery in Succasunna, N.J. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested memorial contributions to the Tunnell Cancer Center; 18947 John J. Williams Hwy.; Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971, or to Mariner’s Bethel U.M. Church; 81 Central Ave.; Ocean View, DE 19970. Condolences may be sent online at www.melsonfuneralservices.com.
