Ruth Hudson Ayres, 90, of Millsboro, Del., passed away Monday, Nov. 6, 2017, at Delaware Hospice, Milford, Del. She was the daughter of the late Harley Washington Hudson and Edna Lowe Hudson of Millsboro.
On May 16, 1948, she married her sweetheart, Lambert P. Ayres III, the son of Harry and Amalia Ayres and the nephew of the late state Sen. William H. Ayers and Catherine White Ayres, all of Millsboro. She graduated from Millsboro High School in 1945 and later completed several college courses, including Spanish.
Ayres was an office clerk at Millsboro Poultry, a receptionist and later an accounts-receivable clerk at Houston White Lumber Company before joining the Delaware Department of Health & Social Services, from which she retired after more than 30 years as a social worker and supervisor in food stamps.
While there, she worked in several departments, wrote manuals for all three counties, worked as supervisor in food stamps, carried caseloads for aid to dependent children, gave general assistance and determined eligibility of children in daycare. She finally retired on Jan. 30, 1989, to enjoy life with her husband.
She taught exercise class for many years at Huling Cove and showcased the classes on TV, as was requested, since everyone enjoyed them. They were convenient for all, whether people wished to sit or stand. She enjoyed traveling with her husband on all kinds of trips by bus or cruise ship.
Ayres is survived by a sister, Lois H. White, and her husband, Robert; her niece, Veronica White; and several nieces and nephews.
