Pedestrian killed on Route 1 in Middlesex

A New York man was killed this week while walking along Route 1 south of Bethany Beach.

Police said the incident occurred on Wednesday, Dec. 19, around 5:26 p.m., when a 2016 Nissan Frontier pickup truck was traveling northbound on Route 1 (Coastal Highway) in the left lane in Middlesex Beach, approaching the intersection of Hickman Plaza Drive.

David W. Henderson, 79, of Ithaca, N.Y, was walking in a westerly direction within the unlit and unregulated crosswalk, police said, adding that the driver of the pickup truck did not observe the pedestrian and struck him with the front of his vehicle.

Henderson was wearing dark clothing and not carrying a light, the DSP reported. However, they said, just ahead of him was his wife, who was reportedly holding a small keychain-type flashlight. His wife was not struck, they noted.

Henderson was initially transported to the Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, and was subsequently transferred to Christiana Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He succumbed to his injuries on Dec. 20, police reported.

The driver of the pickup truck, a 57-year-old man from Ocean View, was properly restrained and not injured as a result of the crash, police said. The roadway was closed for about three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
