Talivaldis G. “Valdis” Berzins of Ocean View, Del., died peacefully Nov. 6, 2017, at Delaware Hospice in Milford, Del., after a brief illness. He was born in 1928 in Riga, Latvia. During World War II, at the age of 16, Berzins, his parents and his brother had to flee Latvia for safety.
They eventually found a new home in America, where Berzins worked hard to provide for his family in Sussex County, Del. That hard work paid off in his ability to buy land, which he and his family farmed for several years. He later became a successful builder and land developer, and was the founder of the Ocean Way Estates community.
Berzins was preceded in death by his wife, Gaida, and his parents, Rudolfs and Milda Berzins. He is survived by two sons, Raymond Berzins of Ocean View and Sigurd Berzins and his wife, Susan, of Frankford, Del.; four grandchildren; his brother, Modris Berzins, and his wife, Nancy, of Ocean View; a nephew; two nieces; and his loving partner of 45 years, Marita Snore.
A celebration-of-life service will be held on Monday, Nov. 20, 2017, at 11 a.m., with viewing at 10 a.m., at Melson Funeral Services, 361 West Avenue in Ocean View, Del. Private interment will follow at Mariner’s Bethel United Methodist Church in Ocean View, Del.
